Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” and a Run For the Border

Friday Afternoon Time Travel

It’s interesting how music can transport us to certain places and events along the timelines of our lives. Long ago, before streaming and digital downloads, FM radio was the standard. There was a local DJ who played Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” every Friday during the after work drive time. I heard it so often it became part of my Friday routine.

Today I found myself hopping around some Spotify playlists and came across “Hey Joe.” For a brief moment I felt myself transported back in time, sitting in my car and driving home from work. I got to reminiscing about why the DJ played that song every Friday. It wasn’t because the DJ caught his ‘lady’ cheating. He, like most of us driving along listening to the music felt the same way—Who wouldn’t want to run down Mexico way after a long week of work?

Here I am, a few decades after those Friday afternoon commutes still wondering what it would be like to make a run for the border.
